We frequently go swimming at our indoor pool. Every time we are there there are a group of parents making their kids swim laps (5 and 6 year olds) and making them kick on the side of the pool. The whole time their kids are practicing with their parents, the parents are yelling at them like drill sergeants. "KICK, KICK, 1-2-3-4-5-6-7, KICK, HARDER. KICK. Swim faster, faster, faster. NOT LIKE THAT." You get the picture. One family had their kids swimming laps the entire time I was (45 min). And then when I left and they continued to push their kids. The entire time I am thinking, "what the hell people". It seems a tad extreme since they are so young, and you know all of this time is outside of their team swim practice.
So today was my first glimpse of Jude playing T-Ball. Let's just say he's in the running for worst player on the team. It's between two kids, and he's one of them.
Holy Cow.
I know he's only 5 1/2, but he can't throw, catch, bat, or even pay attention. At one point (while he should be catching) he sat on the ground and wanted to know when practice would be over. I spent a lot of time laughing (our of horror) or shaking my head as I looked at the ground. Of course I told him he did a good job and needs to practice (oh yeah, and the coaches told me he needs home ..aka.remedial... practice).
All I can think of is "STEP AND THEN THROW, PAY ATTENTION, SWING, SWING, SWING, BAT, BAT, HARDER, HARDER, RUN."

welcome to a whole new kind of guilt! feeling guilty for not practicing with your kid as much as you think you should. t-ball, basketball, soccer... every sport we hear "remember to practice at home" from the coach. and of course a week flies by before we can even think about getting outside to practice.
but just as long as they're having fun, that's all that counts.
great, i am so excited.
the fun should be the "core", but it is hard to watch your kid be the horrible one on the team!
: )
Just wait til your darling BOY is picking and smelling dandylions DURING the game. How sweet. And embarassing.
LOL. Sean was the same when we started soccer. It gets better.
That first game he was all gangly and akward. Cried when he didn't play or if he got pushed.
Now, 3 months later he is "getting it" and having fun.
