Mommybits and WMAG have recently blogged about going green (has green become a verb..Wikipedia?). Having children has made me more conscientious of the need to go green. I really have to put forth an effort in order to teach and model good green behavior to my children. Of course we started with the basics of teaching no littering and just basic good behavior of thinking of others (like always putting the grocery cart in the cart corral when your done, etc..) Anyway, two years ago we started recycling, which was long overdue. I take the recyclables to the recycle center instead of paying Rumpke for their bin and service, because that just irritates me. Insert soapbox here: They should make us pay for trash and have recycling for free in order to encourage/"force" recycling. (I did write a letter to Rumpke).
Jason has had to come on boarded with my "hippiness", as he calls it.
I am looking for bags to buy to take to the grocery, to reduce my plastic bag waste. There has been A LOT of talk about those plastic bags recently.
And my new endeavor? Composting.
I am reading a book The Urban/Suburban Composter by Mark Cullen. This is my guide to figuring out how to start the pile and what bin to buy. It is pretty interesting and pretty narly. It goes against every EWWW factor that I have. Maggots, rodents, etc. Gross. BUT, I do see how much yard waste and food waste that I put into that big Rumpke Mountain that Colrain Township houses. SO, I will try to begin my composting pile and give back to my flower and mulch beds. We will see.
So I will be "greening" more in my house/yard.
Oh, and I am going to go unplug the 3 cell phone chargers we have plugged in. YIKES.

Yahoo! Soon you too will be doing "no waste" lunches for school :)
Oh the joy!
I love my cotton grocery bags by the way. It takes a lot to go "bag free" - I finally have around 10 that seems to do the trick. I even purchased produce bags to eliminate the use of those small plastic bags for lettuce, etc.
Now I need to remember to take them to Target with me...
I thought about those produce bags the other day.
Where did you get those bags?
Hmmm...I just happen to know of an organization that just published a "carbon calculator" to help you grasp what type of carbon footprint you are responsible for.

I hear it's a bunch of hippie freaks that work for them, but hmmmpfff...who knows. hehe...
YAY for going green!!!
Ohhhh produce bags..tell me more...I complain about them all the time to Tim. Just this summer I finally convinced him not to put every piece of vegetable we have in one and now we don't use them AT ALL! And I am proud to say we are with you on the cotton grocery bags too! It actually makes it much easier to carry the groceries home in!!
Amie you are going to have to tell me how the composting goes...I want to do it in a smaller version with my kids in the classroom with worms.... :)

Here is the link - if it doesn't work just go to ecobags.com and click on produce bags. These are the ones I bought. I like them!
Jason-- I am proud to say that our family score is below the national average on the Carbon Calculator.
However, when I put stuff in honestly I felt rather guilty... especially the car questions.
: )
All I can say is 'oh, my'
