Botcon, what? Yeah, that is what I would have said prior to today, but I now know all about Botcon. Botcon is the Transformers Convention. Jude is very into Transformers and after hearing about this convention on the radio, we decided it would be good to take him to this event.
He was dressed and ready at 6:45 this morning, wallet and money ready to spend. He spent all week preparing for this event by earning extra money doing chores around the house.
Yesterday, he cleaned both showers, dusted the stairs, and helped me pick up (more about the greatness of child labor later) and earned $2. He has to save 50% of his money, and put some in his "share box" to give back. (we have these great banks called Moon Jars.
Anyway, to get back to the ACTUAL event.
It was not what I had judgmentally expected. I fully expected, to quote my husband, that the headgear to prom date ratio would be MUCH HIGHER. I expected much more "dressing up". I, unfairly.. I guess, group together the Star Wars, Star Trek, Lego, and Transformer people all together..... like comic book lovers...
, but we saw a bit of this:
.
There were multiple booths of collectors, t-shirt makers, and Hasbro (toy genius) were there to show what they do (toy makers and illustrators) for a living. One of the Hasbro employees talked to Jude and gave him some free stuff. The voice actors from Transformers Animated were there, but you had to pay an extra $25 to talk to them (we didn't do that).
It was very interesting. They had some great artist there. There were BIG nerds, but a lot of "alternative" looking teenagers and adults, and Transformer crazed kids attending with their parents.
No matter what, Jude had fun... mostly spending his money to buy his NEW OPTIMUS PRIME. Lily had fun too..... : )
I will foster this, if that is what he wants. Whatever makes him happy. Jason said, "I think this is a smart kids toy." He's right.
It wasn't the baseball player, or the popular kid in high school that is successful now, right? No, it was the kid who sat next to you, the one you didn't know, who probably played with his transformers, He-Men, or Star Wars figures. They are the ones now designing video games, working for Apple or Google. No matter what, I just want my kids to be happy.. Botcon nerd or not.

That actually sounds like fun!
I so wanted to take Sean to this this weekend but wasn't able to make it happen. I agree with you. I encourage the smart side of Sean. I look back at some of the cool guys and jocks from high school and today they are exactly the same.
Jude and Austin can be the nerds that work for Apple or Google... Jude, the Transformer nerd, and Austin, the Star Wars nerd.
Austin may the one dressed at a Star Wars convention some day!
