So my friend Karri over at Jackonthelake is participating in a women's sprint triathlon sponsored by Danskin this summer. I think this is great! A triathlon, hmmm. Maybe I could do this. I feel like I am in pretty good shape. I have a few races under my belt, including a half-marathon. I can complete an hour long spinning class. On a normal day, I can run 3-4 miles without any trouble. Then I went swimming.
So, I have my stylish goggles and my even more stylish swimming cap and I head for the Mason Rec Center. I used to be on the swim team (uhh like 22 years ago) so I can swim laps.
Holy cow. There is nothing like a new cross training activity to make you feel ever so out of shape. This is how I felt last year when I bought my spinning bike. I did swim laps for a half hour and believe me it kicked my butt.
So, I came home tonight to see how many 25 meter laps I would have to swim to complete a mile swim.... 60. Yes, 60. That is A LOT.
I really think that a triathlon would be very cool to do, but I just don't know if I can bring myself to be able to swim 60 laps of freestyle, nonstop by July, without dying.

Steve took Jack to the Y to swim one day and I thought I would try something new & swim laps.HAHAHOHO!Yeah, after one length of the pool I was choking, water and snot was shooting out of my nose and I could hardly move my arms. The funny part was the old wrinkly people whizzing past me in the "fast" lane. WAY WAY harder than it looks.
It is awesome that she is doing that but there is no freakin' way I could do 60 laps in the pool. I am winded after 4 or 5.
CLARIFICATION: It is a SPRINT Triathlon so only a 1/2 mile swim. And it is across a lake so you won't be stuck in a pool going back and forth.
but now you are scaring me :) I haven't even tried yet - I start the swimming portion next month.
K
You should do Morgan's Little Miami triathlon. Instead of swimming, you canoe. You canoe with a partner for 6 miles, run back 6 miles and then bike for 18 miles. I did it one year with my husband, and it was fun.
Swimming is intense! I used to swim as a kid all the time, but now I can barely make it two times across the pool without dying.
Ok Karri.
Yeah.
30 laps.
No way either!
: )
