Ever wonder why you can sit on the couch and down a bag of Oreos, a bag of candy corn, or drink the BIG GULP of Mountain Dew? Well, it is because of High Fructose Corn Syrup.
I was aware that this ingredient existed, but I wasn't aware of it's diet evil.
I decided to read the book The Abs Diet to shed more pounds and to drop my body fat percentage. This book opened my eyes to the world of Powerfoods and the evil of High Fructose Corn Syrup.
I was sure we weren't eating a lot of this ingredient. WRONG. It isn't in the box of Cocoa Pebbles, but it was in my Special K Berry cereal. It was in my natural 100% whole wheat bread. Stand in the aisle and read the ingredient list on all of the breads. Good luck finding on without HFCS. There are a few, not many.
High Fructose Corn Syrup was introduced into food production in the late 1970s, early 1980s. HFCS is cheaper to produce and sweeter than liquid sugar and it has a longer shelf life. Great for the companies. Bad for our health.
What HFCS does to your body is also great for the company.
When you eat any type of carbohydrate, your body releases insulin to regulate your body weight. Your body pushes those carb calories into your muscles for later use and then suppresses your appetite. HFCS does not stimulate insulin production. This causes you to eat (or drink) without appetite suppression AND your muscles still need carbohydrates. So, it actually leaves you hungry wanting more. This makes it possible to eat a whole bag of Oreos because they are made with HFCS. This would not be possible if they were made with white sugar.
You get the picture. This makes great sales for the companies.. the more we consume.. the more COKE profits....etc.,etc.,etc..
Start reading labels. Check your fruit flavored yogurt label, the canned fruit you buy for your kids, your ketchup, pasta sauce, etc. You will be surprised.
I know that my family will get this ingredient at times, but we have tried to eliminate this all together in our house by being more label conscious.

We also try to avoid it but like you said, try finding a loaf of bread where it isn't in the top four ingrediants. There are two loaves that our store carries and they both suck.
Also, try finding muffin mix without it. They are double the price of regular mix and are the crappy healthy variety that have no taste.
It's annoying.
They seem to sneak that stuff in everywhere. It's getting harder and harder to trust manufacturers and to remember whats good and what's bad.
That would explain why I downed a butt-load of candy corn pumpkins last night...
That is OK b/c when I was writing this, I was CRAMING all of the candy corn that I could get into my body. I couldn't find the pumpkins at Kroger.
I am jealous.
Ack! Too many bad things for you. They're everywhere. How can you resist???
