California Bill

So as I am reading my Costco Connection magazine (you know how I LOVE Costco!) I am appalled at the Informed Debate article enclosed. They always have a cheesy article that they ask their members their opinion on, but this one is horrible.
It is as follows:
"California recently tired to introduce a bill making illegal to spank children younger than 4 years old. If it had passed, the state would have become the first to make the corporal punishment of infants and toddlers a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. More than a dozen countries, mostly in Europe, already have laws against spanking.". This quote from Scared Monkeys pretty much somes it up for me.
"So now the Government wants to come into your home and tell you whether or not you can spank your child. Because politicians are supposed to know how to raise your children better than you. Yes, “nanny government” is on its way to invade the sanctity of your homes California. Define irony … when a parent can get sentenced to more jail time for reprimanding their child than a convicted child molester like in Vermont. Is that irony, or just disgustingly pathetic?".
Just for some humor here are a few quotes from the members opinon section:
Noelia Hernandez from Gypsum, CO says: "talking is the way to deal with situations". UM have you every tried to reason with a 2 year old? Yeah, how's that working for ya?
Vivian Lee from West Corvina, CA says: "Kids under 4 are too young to understand right or wrong." UM.. yeah, I guess you better save some money up for bail for your kids. My kids understand the basics of right and wrong by 3 years old and you don't have to spank your kids to teach them that. NICE.
Then we have John Sorrow, Nashville TN: "punish little children when they misbehave, not to the point of abuse, but warm their little bottoms up." They always have to capture the hillbillies comment somewhere along the way.
Regardless of your stand on spanking etc., I don't want the government deciding my parenting skills for me. If they regulate this, what is next?

Yeah, ridiculous.

My own opinion is that there is a few year window that spanking is even effective - younger than two - they don't get it. Older than five, well, aren't they getting a bit old for spanking anyway? At that point you can start taking things away - currency as Dr. Phil says.

But California does and says a lot of dumb things - ask Keith to talk about Sanfrancisco's recycling policies - he goes mad :)

See I think the same.. spanking only works up until a age of 5 too..
We'll have to get Keith started about the recycling : )
