Holding on to my "YOUTH"

Ok, I am 31, born in 1975. In my mind, I am still HIP and YOUNG. My friend Karri and I were shopping in Chicago last week and we were looking at shoes. I pointed out some skull Rocket Dog shoes and stated that I liked the shoes. She said, you know we only have a couple of years left that we can wear stuff like that and get away with it without looking too old for the trends. OH MY GOD. Am I going to have to start shopping at Talbot's or worse yet... CHICO'S? It causes some serious anxiety. I tried on this sweater at the Lucky store and I thought, maybe I am too old now... so I did not purchase this sweater... although in my mind it would look fine on me.. (I am still hip AND young).

There are other things that help me hold onto my youth.

My TV shows help me hold onto that... on my TIVO... I have The Real World, I have watched this since high school and until recently I haven't felt that I was too old for this show(Mark and Eric have retired from the show and they are my age). I am in the midst of the "Real World Road Rules Challenge: THE DUEL" and The Real World: Denver. I will continue to watch. Karri you have to check Evan out from The Duel. Jason and I have both decided this is Jackson grown up (his looks) and he is Canadian to go with your theme...

I feel staying on top of music helps keep me young. If I know and listen to hip music, I stay hip. I like Panic! at the Disco, The White Stripes, AFI, The Raconteurs.. to name a few.. they are hip right? I do still however like my old bands... The Smiths, Peter Murphy, The Stone Roses, or The Cure. I watched a recent special on TV featuring The Cure... UMMM, yeah, I feel old

OH MY GOD... Don't they look a lot alike?????

Is that Robert Smith or Liz Taylor?

Who is to know?

I am getting old.

So the lease to my Mazda 6 is about to be over. So we are setting out to buy a new car....... or new for me anyway. I REALLY don't want to drive a minivan. I do need more seats for carpooling etc. So we went out looking at the Crossover cars. Man, they are just expensive and you can't get a used one because they are all so new. And this goes for the 3rd Row SUV's, unless you are willing to drive a tank.. such as the Excursion. Anyway, I found one that is reasonable... The Mazda 5. I have looked at it from a far. I looks like a squished wagon. I drove it today. What came out of my mouth... I said, yeah this is a van in disguise. It isn't "cool".

Then I did it, I test drove a used Nissan Quest. The car salesman was laughing at me, he said I looked miserable. I was. A minivan? But unless I want to have $500 car payment, this may be the only option. HELP my grip on my youth is slipping......Can you drive a mini van and wear skull attire?

Um, I was totally with you until the minivan decision. I will support it...but NO you cannot be hip and drive that no matter what cool music they put in the tv commercial :)

And the skull sweater was WAY cool. Had it not been designed to fall below the breasts, I would have said buy it!

We can continue to stay HIP just maybe not TRENDY in years to come. I will never wear Talbot until my 60th birthday. But right now trendy is gross 80's Flashdance clothes so I'm okay not looking trendy for now.

Besides, with your cool awesome new body - you can probably wear my red leather pants...want 'em?? :)

I think we could be kindred spirits.... I thought I was the only one. I too love the Real World - I have watched it since it's inception (Did you see that Road Rules is coming back?).

I found your blog to be right on with what I am feeling right now. I am turning 31 next month and I have a hard time remembering that I am not in my early 20's anymore. I still feel the same way, still like a lot of the same stuff, but realize - when I stop and think about it - that I am not that person anymore. It is crazy that you wrote about this as I was just getting ready too.

OH - I should also mention that we went through the same thing with the mini van/ adult car decision. I remember test driving a Ford Taurus and wanting to throw up. We ended up going with an used SUV which definetly saved me from the Minivan.

If Jason ever has a chance he should ask Marty what it's like to ride in a minivan that your wife is driving...lol

Anytime it comes down to saving money and being cool, I pick saving money! I never wanted to be a minivan mom and it was HARD to give up my Audi, but I have come to love my Honda, and it is a must have with three kids! Am I not hip and cool now? Hell I don't have time to care! I have three kids to buckle into a car :)

Do what feels right, if you aren't comfortable then it's not for you!

Okay, I love the Nissan Quest! I don't own one, but if we were buying a minivan I'd buy that one. I think it's cool. And you could always have flames painted on the side or a scull and cross-bones painted on the hood if you wanted. That would be hilarious!

I think "cool" is a state of mind. That's how I justify my apathy for fashion, my limited knowledge of teeny-pop culture, and many other seemingly non-cool aspects of my 30-something life. I'm still cool! And I always will be.

Hey - Just because I fear the minivan doesn't mean I don't appreciate them. My best friend drives one and it is amazing. It is like a clown car the way she can pack all of those kids in there - it has two rows of seats so we always take it when we go out together. She can also entertain them in a way I can't in my car. Hers has those tv screens and a place to plug in a headset to listen to music. The kids love it and we actually get to have girl talk when we drive somewhere.

I have a Mazda 6 wagon. When I bought it, a friend exclaimed "THAT'S A FAMILY CAR!" Little did she know, baby was on board (I hadn't told anyone yet.) I like it. It's pretty spacious. I think it still looks "cool."

I also like the Mazda 5. I was rented one recently when my Mazda was in the shop. I said to the guy "I never drove a MINIVAN before!" And he's like "This isn't a minivan." After driving it, I really didn't think it was. (My parents had a full-scale, no doubt about it, minivan growing up and I got to drive that bad around town when I was 16.) But the Mazda 5 also seemed to have less space than my Mazda 6.

And here endeth my car review...

I don't look at others and think LOSER in the minivan. It just feels like my parents b/c that is what my dad drove. I promise, it is just a personal conviction. If I do get one, then I will paint flames and skulls on it!!!!!!!!

No, there is nothing wrong with minivans - they make sense for families I guess. Lots of room and what not. I still don't like them but maybe b/c I grew up with one too - good point!

They just don't say "cool" if that is what you are going for. Of course I don't think my cars really say it either :)
